The Assassin’s Creed saga celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2022. On this occasion we have ranked the canonical episodes, from best to worst.

In this year 2022, Ubisoft celebrates the 15th anniversary of one of its strongest brands: Assassin’s Creed. Infinitely available since the first opus (spin-off, film, etc.), built around a community of loyal fans and not destined to disappear, it will continue to evolve with Assassin’s Creed Infinity. Summoned in 2021, the next episode will be a game-service, a platform designed to evolve over time. We should know more next school year.

By November 2020, the Assassin’s Creed saga had exceeded the threshold of 155 million copies sold (cumulative). A colossal figure, which makes it one of the best sellers of all time.

On the occasion of its 15th anniversary, we have decided to rank the canonical games, from best to worst.

Our leaderboard of Assassin’s Creed games

1 – Assassin’s Creed II (Ezio Auditore trilogy, 2009-2011)

The first Assassin’s Creed it was a revolutionary concept with an unfinished aftertaste. His retinue, soberly baptized Assassin’s Creed II, it was able to adequately exploit all its strength around three pillars that still remain today: a perfectly immersive environment, because it is faithfully reproduced (Florence, Venice, the Vatican, etc.); gameplay that combines stealth and action; lots of things to do. Ubisoft even allows itself to play with history, echoing events (the Pazzi conspiracy) and inviting some characters of the time (Leonardo da Vinci, converted into an inventor in the service of the assassins).

Also, when Assassin’s Creed II came out, we still believed in the meta-universe imagined by Ubisoft and articulated around a hero: Desmond Miles, able to relive the memories of his ancestors thanks to cutting-edge technology (Abstergo). This episode also focuses on a charismatic hero: Ezio Auditore was entitled to two more adventures (Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood And Assassin’s Creed Revelations), constituting a complete trilogy. No other hero has received such broad treatment.

Playable today on : PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

2 – Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018)

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey it’s at The origins of Assassin’s Creed What it was Assassin’s Creed II for Assassin’s Creed. Namely: a total and inexorable improvement of solid foundations. Odyssey maximizes the possibilities offered by the new generation license formula, inspired by modern role-playing games (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt). Some will say it’s no longer Assassin’s Creed, but that would mean forgetting that the essence of the franchise lies first and foremost in its ability to take us on a journey into an ancient era, with a welcome authenticity (here, Ancient Greece). It is also a true melting pot of everything Ubisoft has been able to imagine in recent years.

Above all, you have to hold on to finish Assassin’s Creed Odysseyas the content makes you dizzy.

Playable today on : PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

3 — The Origins of Assassin’s Creed (2017)

The origins of Assassin’s Creed it is the episode of redemption. After years of pulling the rope, at the rate of one ambitious episode per year, Ubisoft has hit the wall head-on. It was therefore necessary for the French company to act to restore the image of its strong brand, otherwise it would annoy the players more and more. The developers opted for a very simple approach: taking their time to rethink the basics. That’s why we had to wait two years before playing The origins of Assassin’s Creed, which first of all has its idyllic setting for itself (Egypt and its marvelous pyramids). He then started the real revival, with mechanics that look more towards the RPG side.

Playable today on : PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

4 – Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (2020)

In terms of technical results, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the best. Logical, because it is the most recent and the first to benefit from the power of the latest consoles (PS5, Xbox Series). However, it doesn’t convince as much as it doesOdyssey And Origins due to a certain form of stagnation (the fighting remains perfectible) and because its content is too dispersed. Moreover, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla it feels like it’s no longer a true Assassin’s Creed at times, with very few elements reminiscent of the meta-universe and lazy writing.

Playable today on : PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

5 – Assassin’s Creed Unity (2014)

We are perhaps a bit chauvinistic to put it Assassin’s Creed Unity so high in the ranking, because it is a bit of a fluctuating work, the one with which the feeling of tiredness began to arise. In print, its Metacritic score did not exceed 70 out of 100 (PC), while its predecessor still exceeded 80 (also on PC). Prevents, Assassin’s Creed Unity it remains a feat in its ability to immerse us in the heart of the French Revolution. And what’s more exciting than walking on the roofs of Notre-Dame de Paris? Yes, Ubisoft had eyes bigger than his stomach Assassin’s Creed Unity, hence the untold number of bugs. But we really want to be chauvinists.

Playable today on : PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

6 — Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013)

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag it could almost act as an anomaly in the Assassin’s Creed saga, since it’s more of a pirate game. You have to take it as such to appreciate it at its fair value, with gameplay focused on naval combat, in the seas of the Caribbean (the landscapes are completely sublime). In terms of atmosphere, the golden age of piracy brings an undeniable appeal, especially for fans of Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Finally, hero Edward Kenway easily steps onto the podium of the most charismatic characters Ubisoft has ever imagined.

Playable today on : PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

7 – Assassin’s Creed III (2012)

Assassin’s Creed III suffers from the excellence of Ezio Auditore’s trilogy. If in 2013 there remained a generally positive experience, it is not the one we remember most when preparing the financial statements. As a bonus, it was the episode that eliminated the concept of a meta story centered around Desmond Miles: the modern day hero dying at the end (a twist). Note that we play Connor Kenway, grandson of Edward Kenway, the main character ofAssassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and another ancestor of Desmond Miles. This is the moment when Ubisoft has lost us a bit: the fourth chapter then goes back to a more distant past than the third, while remaining centered on a hero of the present who should be dead (Desmond Miles).

Playable today on : PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

8 — The Murderer’s Creed (2007)

It’s a bit cruel to put the absolute first Assassin’s Creed very low in the rankings. Without him, Ubisoft wouldn’t be where it is today. However, in the end it’s just a rough draft for the flamboyant Assassin’s Creed II, which transcends the recipe with much tastier ingredients. The great concern ofAssassin’s Creed ? It’s too repetitive gameplay, which consists of killing targets by collecting some clues during an investigation. From one lens to another one gets the impression of always doing the same and there is not yet this feeling of freedom that allows us to breathe.

Playable today on : PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

9 — Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (2015)

Self Assassin’s Creed Unity the fall of the old formula began, Assassin’s Creedy Syndicate he took it upon himself to deliver the blow. But he had an argument to make: we play the twins (a woman, a man), in a city of London marked by the industrial revolution. We pass from one to the other according to the missions. On the other hand, this novelty fails to hide the lack of freshness in the overall structure of the game, also released in 2015, a year that saw top titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Where is it Bloodborne. In short, it was time to evolve.

Playable today on : PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

10 – Assassin’s Creed, the movie (2016)

Without a doubt, one of the worst film adaptations of a video game saga, in which Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard exchange bewildered glances of lovers in a despicable photograph. There is really nothing to be saved in this film, which is too serious to become an alcoholic. We hope that the TV series, scheduled on Netflix, pays more homage to the world of games.
