The nineteenth edition of the Mediterranean Games is about to end. After ten days of celebration, Oran and the Algerians can only be proud.

The sport party, side of the party, was successful in Algeria. The 2022 Mediterranean Games were a success for the host country, a triumph at all levels. Organizers, participants and spectators all defended Oran by highlighting its merits and achievements. This is the side of efficiency.

Oran in the heart of the Mediterranean

Nearly 3,400 athletes from 26 countries of the Mediterranean basin have settled in Oran. They came to participate in the Mediterranean Games. It is for Algeria, a second organization after that of the 1975 JM which takes place in the capital Algiers.

This multi-sport event opened on a summer night in the beautiful new Olympic Stadium in the radiant city of Miloud Hadefi. A sumptuous opening ceremony has been organized for this 2022 edition, with hundreds of artists, musicians and dancers. Algeria, its landscapes, its history and its influence in the Mediterranean, were at the center of this show, which lasted a good two and a half hours.

The delegations marched in a crazy atmosphere in front of 40,000 lucky people, who were able to watch the opening ceremony live. The enthusiasm of the public continued. Families, women and children rushed to fill the stands and pavilions, to the delight of the athletes. Images we have rarely seen in Algeria. This procedure was facilitated by the establishment of a digital ticket office. This also explains the role that this event assigned them at the time, in the service of spreading a new educational ideal, a new socio-political vision.

This sport festival took place in 37 sites, scattered around the city and its surroundings (Mascara). Some infrastructures are new, others have been refurbished to accommodate the 24 disciplines. The Mediterranean village created for the occasion and spread over 39 hectares did not disappoint. The athletes slept, ate, but also trained in dedicated spaces. Each nation had its own building.

These Mediterranean Games were an open window on Algeria. The opportunity to highlight Algeria’s ability to host large-scale sporting events and to exhibit infrastructures, especially before CHAN 2023 (from 13 January to 4 February) and CAN U17 2023 (from 8 to 30 April ). The radiant city has managed to pull itself out of the game.

A sporting record half fig half grape for the Algerians

Swimmer Syoud Jaouad closed his Algerian participation in the JM on Tuesday, taking second place in the 100m butterfly final. This victory brought Algerian consecrations to 53 medals in total, of which 20 gold. This is the best result in the history of Algerian participation, breaking the record recorded at the Tunis Games in 2001.

In the general classification, Algeria, which occupied the podium at the beginning of the Games, lost ground, falling to 4th place, behind France (21 golds). After ten days of competitions, Italy (48 golds) managed to overthrow Turkey (45 golds), which until then held the first place.

Team sports draw an empty space

The national selections of the various collective disciplines that took part in this 19th edition of the Games of Oran missed the mark, being eliminated from the group stage (with the exception of the men’s 3×3 basketball team that qualified for the quarter-finals and was ranked 5th out of 11 participating teams) under the eyes of a fervent public oran present in force in all the competition halls.

In handball, the results are catastrophic. Ladies and gentlemen have left the competition without brilliance, and this, from the preliminary stage. The Men’s National Seven (2 wins) will have had a rough ride, before joining Egypt to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations, 11-18 July. The same goes for women. The Algerians have failed to return to competition after almost three years of hibernation, recording three defeats in a row. They ended up last in their group.

For volleyball, the results were disappointing. With a win against Greece and two losses against Turkey and France with the same score, the men’s selection was eliminated with a set difference compared to Greece. For their part, the women’s selection failed to win a single set during the competition and left the Oran matches with a record three defeats, against Turkey, Spain and Italy.

Even the lob did not delight the Algerians. After having foiled the predictions of the first day against the winner of the previous edition, Spain, Algeria U18 has failed. Mourad Slatni’s foals failed to get rid of Morocco and the French team, losing sight of the goal of reaching the semifinals.

Unlike team sports, individual athletes took advantage of this Mediterranean event to show off. Thanks to karate (4 golds), boxing (5 golds) and athletics (5 golds) Algeria has risen to 4th place, also counting on the success of its athletes in badminton (1), fencing (1), judo (1 ), Greek-Roman wrestling (1) and weightlifting. Therefore, the winning development strategies established by these different federations have resulted in several medals. Other federal bodies for collective sports need to draw inspiration from this to catch up.

We remind you that the nineteenth edition of the 2022 Mediterranean Games will end on Wednesday 6 July with the closing ceremony scheduled for the Olympic stadium in Oran. A ceremony that will be marked above all by the presence of the Franco-Algerian composer DJ Snake, but not on stage. He will only be the host of the organizers.
