Choosing the right Android smartphone is much more complicated than with iPhones. In the field of smartphones powered by Google’s mobile operating system, there is a lot to choose from – Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola or even Google itself offer a plethora of phones.

Enough to have knots in the brain when you make your choice. If you want a high-end flagship, the list narrows down to the recently released OnePlus 10 Pro, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the Google Pixel 6 Pro. To help you with your reflection, ZDNet’s editors have compared the top two. smartphone from this list to give you a verdict that will avoid unpleasant surprises!

Radically opposed designs

OnePlus 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra show two different approaches to industrial design. The former takes a no holds barred approach, with rounded corners and a lightweight body (201g), making the OnePlus 10 Pro surprisingly comfortable to hold, even with a protective case. The S22 Ultra, on the other hand, takes design cues from its Note counterpart, with sharp angles and a boxy shape. This allows you to expand the interaction surface at the expense of a less pleasant feeling of heaviness on a daily basis.

However, both devices have similarly sized screens. The OnePlus 10 Pro has a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel, capable of flexing between 1 and 120Hz. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has a slightly larger 6.8-inch AMOLED panel, which also has LTPO 2.0 technology. for adaptive refresh rates. The result: whichever model you choose, you’ll enjoy a vibrant, sharp and color-accurate display.

Either way, the phones use Gorilla Glass Victus material, which offers better resistance to drops and bumps. The back covers are also coated with a matte satin finish, reducing the fingerprints and marks that typically plague phones with a glossy exterior.

Unbeatable screens despite different approaches

Underneath the screens of these two devices there are two fundamental differences: the front cameras and the in-screen fingerprint sensors. Since the advent of perforated cameras, OnePlus has kept its front camera in the upper left corner of the screens. On the Samsung side, the punch is now housed in the center of the screen. Both cameras are small enough to remain discreet, and overall, they are really better than the iPhone’s notch design.

OnePlus 10 Pro uses an optical fingerprint sensor on the screen, while Samsung has opted for an ultrasonic sensor. In this case, the latter proves to be the most efficient, provided you use 3D mapping to accurately register your fingerprints. Whether you’re in the dark or your fingers are wet, the Samsung’s ultrasonic sensor is more likely to unlock properly than the OnePlus 10 Pro. That’s not to say the latter doesn’t work as well – it’s just as fast and uses light reflections instead of the pressure to scan the finger.

Other hardware differences between these two smartphones include OnePlus’s side warning slider, which is similar to that of the iPhone. By switching between clicks, the phone switches to silent, vibrate or sound mode. If the S22 Ultra doesn’t have a physical slider, it makes up for it with its native S Pen, located on the bottom left of the device.

Whether you’re a creative, student, or Galaxy Note fan, the S Pen is a Samsung experience that no other manufacturer has been able to replicate. Finally, let’s talk about water and dust resistance. While not all OnePlus 10 Pros are IP68 certified, it can be assumed that the device will withstand normal splashing and diving. On the other hand, whatever Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra you buy, the device will come with IP68 certification. This is one of the other features that justify its higher price.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

The OnePlus 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra are both equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processors in terms of performance. In the Geekbench 5 test, Samsung beats OnePlus with a single-core score of 1,232 (versus 985), but falls short with a multi-core score of 3,433 (versus 3,446). Graphics-intensive gaming, multitasking, and daily app loading are no problem for these two devices.

However, if you are looking for a phone with as much RAM and storage space as possible, the S22 Ultra is the best choice. It comes in 12GB and 16GB RAM configurations, with storage capacities ranging from 128GB to 1TB. The OnePlus lags despite its 12GB / 256GB capacity. Both devices also have their own overlays on Android 12.

Although OnePlus’ OxygenOS system is no longer the “stock Android” alternative, it is still free of bloatware and animations are fluid in the apps. Samsung’s OneUI software is a bit more complex, with native Samsung apps pre-installed and a host of widgets and features. While the learning curve is wider for the Galaxy device, it leaves a greater impression that you are getting what you pay for.

In terms of connectivity, OnePlus and Samsung support 5G. However, the OnePlus 10 Pro does not support all upcoming frequencies of the new generation of mobile technologies, unlike the S22 Ultra, which supports all 5G bands, which allows the device to possibly have the “best” 5G … Once operators have rolled out their own autonomous 5G networks, which are not for tomorrow!

Battery level, both smartphones are equipped with 5000 mAh cells which, according to our tests, have been shown to be able to work all day. And when you need to refuel, OnePlus takes a challenging lead with 80W SuperVOOC charging that can take the 10 Pro from 0% to 100% in under 30 minutes. This is to be compared with Samsung’s 45W limit. When it comes to wireless charging, OnePlus also has the advantage thanks to its 50W speeds compared to the S22 Ultra’s 15W.

Cameras: Advantage for Samsung!

It is undeniable that we rely more than ever on the cameras of our smartphones. Whether it’s capturing a special moment, taking a group selfie or recording a performance, having a reliable point-and-shoot is a must. Fortunately, both the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the OnePlus 10 Pro take stable, high-quality photos and videos.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra leads the way with its four-camera setup on the rear, featuring a 108MP main lens, 12MP ultra wide angle and dual 10MP telephoto lenses for natural depth of field and zoomed photos. When it comes to capturing portraits, Samsung cameras have proven themselves among the best, precisely blurring the background of subjects while keeping the front crisp and clear.

By comparison, OnePlus’ second-generation camera, tuned by Hasselblad, also proved to be capable of competing with the greats. The 10 Pro is equipped with a 48MP main lens, a 50MP ultra wide angle and an 8MP telephoto lens. While it’s not as vivid or punchy as Samsung’s, OnePlus’s camera produces more natural looking photos, which some of you may prefer.

Additionally, you can take RAW photos, which process the images in the most minimal way so that you can adjust the coloring in post. Simply put, no matter which phone you buy, you’ll have a camera that’s suitable for photographers of all skill levels.

Unique features

Finally, let’s talk about the unique features of each phone, starting with the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. The biggest single selling point is the aforementioned S Pen. After a decade of experience perfecting the stylus (via the Galaxy Note), the S Pen is now more useful than ever. In addition to scribbling and note-taking with its 4,096 sensitivity levels, the pen can be used as a Bluetooth remote control for presentations, remote photo shooting or gesture control

For business and productivity, the S22 Ultra can also be connected to an external display to enable Samsung DeX. With the latter, the Galaxy smartphone replicates an almost full-fledged desktop experience. The OnePlus 10 Pro lacks this feature, which makes it less attractive to consumers on the go. Enough to make the S22 Ultra the must-have you need, despite all the qualities demonstrated by its competitor of the day.

There remains the question of the price, lower by OnePlus, which could be able to tip the scales in favor of the latter. Either way, if you opt for either of these two smartphones, you won’t be disappointed, to say the least!
