To conclude the training camp in June 2022, the national team traveled to Qatar to face Iran in a friendly match.
If the road was not there, for many reasons, Algeria has already provided the essential: overcoming Uganda (2-0) and Tanzania (0-2), the Greens have already taken a serious option for qualifying for the Cup. of Africa 2023 Nations.
For its last outing of the 2021-2022 season, EN will meet Iran, qualified for the 2022 World Cup, in the same Qatar where they were preparing. On an impeccable lawn and in more pleasant playing conditions than in Tanzania, Djamel Belmadi’s selection will have to try new things in order not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
The EN had in fact, during the qualifying for the CAN2021 (postponed to 2022), obtained the first place from the 4th day. The 5th and 6th day, which therefore would not have determined the presence of Algeria in CAN or not, could thus have allowed the carrying out of important tests, the same for the friendlies (against Mali in particular) followed in June.
The opportunity to take risks?
However, Djamel Belmadi, who wanted to establish a dynamic group and not neglect any match, had kept his 11th type and had retorted several times in a press conference that “every game has a stake“. This logic, obviously understandable, nevertheless negatively influenced an Algeria that did not have many alternatives, both in the players and in the game, and had to suffer from it on several occasions (Mali, Burkina Faso twice) before experiencing serious disappointments in Cameroon and against Cameroon.
If the Algeria of June 2022 is not that of 2021, so much is the need to rebuild, to rediscover serenity and margin, it will still be necessary to try, even if only to find a base as broad as it is perennial, even if this means failing. You learn to ride a bike by falling!
Djamel Belmadi has already announced that there will be no 5 players: Boudaoui and Bendebka are injured while M’Bolhi, Mandi and Slimani are at rest. Faced with a very difficult team to manage, and knowing the coach’s desire to build on continuity, without upsetting or questioning everything, the 11th owner of the Greens could therefore be the following:
Zeghba – Benayada – Tougaï – Touba – Hamache – Bennacer – Zerrouki – Kadri – Ounas – Amoura – Belaïli
This match, which does not have huge repercussions on the future of the Greens (the unbeaten run is now only two games while the friendlies do not bring many points in the FIFA rankings) should also be an opportunity to launch some. Among the seven new players called up for EN, five (Mandréa, Zedadka, Hamache, Kadri, Omrani) have not yet played a single minute with the double African champion.
The new national teams, launched in good conditions (not the pressure of a competitive match, a match behind closed doors, a quality lawn), could thus show what they can do with the selection. Likewise, Benayad and Brahimi, who are officially international A’s, should have some time to play.
Kick-off of the Algeria-Iran friendly match tonight at 19:00 Algiers time (20:00 in France, 21:00 local time) at the Qatar SC Stadium in Doha.
