Finally something new

Starfield has been in development at Bethesda for more than seven years and it is equally to say that it is also expected, because it is still more than two decades since Bethesda has granted us a new license. The game is slated for early 2023 for PC and Xbox Series and presents itself as an RPG in space, with a great emphasis as always on its community.

The promise is that Starfield will have more than a thousand planets to explore far and wide in a hundred star systems. The adventure is set in 2330, when humanity left the solar system to colonize other planets. It is on this aspect that the excerpts during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase focused. We will play a miner who has joined a group called Constellation, which is trying to find rare artifacts. We will have to cross paths with other factions, such as the Colonial Union, which is trying to establish a Republic in the galaxy, while the Ryujin Industries, as the name suggests, will rather exploit the resources offered by the latter. Bethesda has announced in all five distinct factions, which we can join or avoid according to our wishes.

According to the official speech, the main Starfield quest will last between 30 and 40 hours:

This is finally a bit longer than our previous games and we could still tweak it. There are more missions, so there may be 20% more content than our previous games.

Emphasis was placed on the character editor which according to the studio is the most comprehensive that has ever been available in a Bethesda game. In addition to appearance, the player will be able to choose a starting class, with five skill trees: Physics, Social, Combat, Science, Technology. As in Oblivion, we can develop these trees in multiple areas, by awarding points, but also by using skills.

Unsurprisingly, gathering resources for crafting is an important part of play and exploration, especially with the ability to build outposts on planets. These shelters play an important role in our exploration, as there we can organize our resources, protect ourselves and create an access point to the planet, thus being able to return there in complete safety.

Added to this is a ships editor that allows you to build your own spaceship and optimize it according to your needs, in exploration or even in combat. It will also be necessary to manage the crew members by assigning them to their task.

Starfield is often compared to Skyrim by the publisher, both for its playability and for the importance of the factions, especially Constellation, the starting faction.

It’s like NASA meets Indiana Jones and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a group of people who are still looking for answers. There are many factions in the game, but Constellation is the main one you will be a part of. It’s kind of like Skyrim in terms of game structure, where you’ll be whoever you want to be, and then there are several factions you can join and really carve your own path.

The comparison does not stop there, because Todd Howard, in an interview for the Washington Post, boasts that Starfield contains more than 150,000 lines of dialogue, where a game like Skyrim has 60,000. here is that the narrative is once again an important aspect in Starfield, while the developers wanted the player to take risks, in particular by trying to convince the NPCs, as could have been the case in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

We’ll still have to show a lot of patience before learning more about Starfield, but there is no doubt that Bethesda still has some nice surprises in store for us for its game, awaiting its release in early 2023.
