See what an interior would look like with Ikea furniture: this is what the Scandinavian brand offers with an augmented reality tool that allows you to project yourself into a future decoration before deciding.
Changing the decor of a room can be as much a pleasure as it is a test, especially when you can’t project yourself. To help its customers visualize their future interiors, Ikea has developed an original augmented reality tool. Called Ikea Kreativ, it uses artificial intelligence to analyze photos of rooms in a house and then erase which furniture is present by replacing it with models from the Scandinavian specialist – and only those, of course! An original and intelligent method to imagine layouts and test furniture without moving, which corresponds to a real need and new consumption habits. In a post published on its blog, Ikea explains that 60% of its customers have changed the layout of their homes after the pandemic and that more and more consumers now prefer to buy remotely, via the Internet, without having to travel. Hence the idea of offering an innovative and practical solution, partly bringing what makes the Swedish brand the charm.
Ikea Kreativ: display furniture directly at home
The operation of Ikea Kreativ is relatively simple and fun, as can be seen in the video made by Ikea. First you need to use a smartphone to take a series of photos of a room with the Scene Scanner function. Once the panoramic shot is taken – shaking the phone in a figure-of-eight motion to acquire more visual data – the artificial intelligence analyzes the scanned scene, the image needs to be edited directly in the application or on the Ikea website on a computer to delete the furniture you want to remove and replace them with virtual Ikea furniture. For those who don’t want to scan their home, there are also over fifty virtual showrooms to place furniture in. This feature currently offers thousands of furniture, carpets, accessories and wall decorations from the Ikea catalog. Support for additional product categories such as furniture and ceiling fabrics is expected to be added in the coming year.
The rendering of Ikea Kreativ is realistic and respectful of proportions. But it is not absolutely accurate, and it is absolutely necessary to check the dimensions of the furniture and the analyzed parts before placing an order, to be sure that everything fits together … Also, the tool only offers a 2D view, and you can’t seem to seeing virtual furniture from all angles, which is quite frustrating.
Ikea Kreativ is already available in the United States. But, for the moment, only via the Ikea application for iOS, which requires the use of an iPhone or iPad for analysis. But an Android version is planned for this summer. Similarly, the tool is expected to be launched in other countries next year.
